Description

"While we could expect little from the Supreme Court, it would be of tremendous advantage to put the highest capitalist court on record"

Influential Socialist (1854-1912) known for publishing the weekly newspaper Appeal to Reason, one of the most important socialist periodicals of the time. TLS signed “J. A. Wayland,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Appeal to Reason letterhead, April 29, 1908. Letter to Robin E. Dunbar, in part: "You have pledged to the Appeal's defence $5.00. We are making a hard fight to get through this Federal Court litigation without accepting a single dollar as a direct contribution for that purpose. You can readily appreciate the great moral effect this announcement will have when it is made in the Appeal after the case has been decided. Nevertheless, I am going to ask that you buy postal subscription cards to the amount of your pledge…You give them to some Socialist agitator or speaker. This will be of great help to the speaker and at the same time will provide the Appeal with the ready money to meet our court expenses and put us in shape to carry it to the highest court should such a course be deemed advisable.

While we could expect little from the Supreme Court, it would be of tremendous advantage to put the highest capitalist court on record on so important a case. Nothing could more clearly show the character of the capitalist courts—and that is what we are trying to do. What a spectacle it would present to the country! The Supreme Court declaring that it is legal to kidnap workingmen—but a crime for the editor of a Socialist paper to even suggest that such a course be pursued in bringing a capitalist fugitive from justice to trial!" In fine condition.
