Description

Rare bilingual autograph of Chinese revolutionary Sun Yat-sen, signed while exiled in London

Founding father and first president of the Republic of China (1866-1925). Scarce double ink signature in English and Chinese, "Sun Yat Sen, April 11th 1897,” on an off-white 4 x 6 sheet of "14 Evelyn Gardens" letterhead. In very fine condition, with two small blots to the signature. Sir John Furley, an English humanitarian active in the Red Cross, lived at 14 Evelyn Gardens, and was an associate of physician James Cantlie, Sun's friend and former professor. Sun Yat-sen had recently been detained at the Chinese Legation in London, where he faced the prospect of deportation and execution in China for his revolutionary activities. Cantlie played a major role in obtaining his release. A supremely desirable autograph of the revered Chinese leader from his period of exile in London.
