Description

American jurist (1811-1889) who was appointed by Franklin Pierce to the United States Supreme Court in 1853, serving until the outbreak of the American Civil War, when he became an official of the Confederate States of America. After serving six months in a military prison, he resumed a successful law practice in New Orleans, where he opposed Reconstruction. Civil War-dated LS signed “J. A. Campbell,” one page, 7.5 x 5.25, Confederate States of America, War Department letterhead, January 25, 1864. Letter to law partners Bacon Baskerville, in full: "The application of James W. Watt for passport through our lines to return to Canada, forwarded by you, has been referred to General Winder for attention." In fine condition, with light show-through along the left edge from old mounting remnants on the back.
