American author, critic, and scholar (1865-1943) who, while a professor at Yale University, taught the first American university course on the modern novel. Vintage glossy 5 x 5 photo of Phelps with a large NBC microphone, affixed to an 8 x 9.75 mount, signed and inscribed on the mount in fountain pen, "For Joe, from your friend, Wm. Lyon Phelps, 26 May 1938.” In very good to fine condition, with the photo peeling from the mount.
