In addition to his political acumen, Churchill was a celebrated writer; though probably best known for this six-volume history of World War II, he published more than forty books and received the 1953 Nobel Prize for Literature 'for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.'
