French-American traveler and anthropologist (1835-1903) best known as the first modern outsider to confirm the existence of gorillas and the Pygmy people of central Africa. ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 6.75, April 26, 1894. Handwritten letter to an admirer, in part: "I thank you very much for the kind and loving feelings you express towards me and my books of travels…I remember well that I delivered a lecture in Keokuk on my return from Africa. The ground was then thickly covered with snow. It is very kind of you to say that 'what knowledge of foreign lands and travel you possess is entirely due to my teachings.' I have always tried to be very exact in my descriptions. To the northern part of Europe I gave the name of 'The Land of the Midnight Sun' a name which has since been adopted. Since the appearance of that work I have studied historical subjects and the Norse literature, the results of which were published in 'The Viking Age' and last winter 'Ivan the Viking' made its appearance."
