Description

The first lady to Mrs. William Randolph Hearst: "I am hoping we will be able to cut down if some of the girls can get work under the new work relief bill"

TLS, one page, 6 x 9.25, White House letterhead, April 18, 1935. Letter to "Mrs. William Randolph Hearst," the silent star Marion Davies, in part: "Thank you very much for your check. I think it is remarkable that you were able to clear that amount because I realize how difficult it is and that every one with anything to give has so many demands. I know that Nancy will stretch every dollar and I am hoping we will be able to cut down if some of the girls can get work under the new work relief bill." In fine condition, with a paperclip impression to the top edge.

In referring to the "new work relief bill," Roosevelt is probably commenting on the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act of 1935, passed on April 8th, which created the Works Progress Administration (WPA). In the act, $27 million was approved for the employment of artists, musicians, actors, and writers under the WPA's Federal Project Number One.
