Letter to Evelyn Byrne, in part: "Of all the disciplines that our students will have to exercise in the years ahead, the habit of reading good literature will be the most rewarding. Through it they will have a richer, fuller, more meaningful existence as it will bring them tremendous insights into the world around them. In my youth I enjoyed reading Revolutionary and Civil War stories and I also spent a great deal of time reading the lives of famous men such as Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, whom I admired greatly. Today, most of my reading time is devoted to current events, although, as in my youth, I still enjoy biographies of famous men such as Winston Churchill and Robert Blake's 'Disraeli.' Books of historical interest such as Barbara Tuchman's 'The Proud Tower,' and 'The Guns of August,' are also among my favorites." In fine condition. Accompanied by photocopies of Nixon's original cover letter and the edited version of this letter. Byrne ran a program at New York City's Elizabeth Barrett Browning Junior High School where she asked major literary and artistic figures for recollections of what books inspired them; some responses were published in the 1971 book Attacks of Taste.
