Description

French statesman (1619-1683) who served as the controller-general of finance under King Louis XIV; his lasting impact on the organization of the country's politics and markets, known as Colbertism, a doctrine often characterized as a variant of mercantilism, earned him the nickname 'le Grand Colbert.' Vellum manuscript DS in French, signed "Colbert," one page, 18 x 12.25, April 20, 1671. Untranslated document issued by Louis XIV, signed at the conclusion by Colbert; the king's signature is secretarial. In very good to fine condition, with heavy intersecting folds, wax crumbling within seal, and scattered soiling.
