Description

French Catholic archbishop, theologian, poet, and writer (1651-1715) celebrated as a reformer and defender of human rights, remembered as the author of The Adventures of Telemachus (1699) and as the royal tutor to Louis, Duke of Burgundy. ALS in French, signed “L'Abbé de Fenelon,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.5 x 7.5, March 31, [1691]. Handwritten letter from Versailles, in part: "I have to offer you a thousand thanks, Sir, for the two letters which you have done me the honor to write me. I have seen here many accounts of the Siege…I am no longer surprised at what should have led you to the War. You have for it a talent & you will impart more to M. the Duke de Chartres than many persons who are by their position charged with his instruction. What pleasure have your accounts given not only to me but also to others who better merit your attentions." In fine condition, with mottled overall foxing. Accompanied by several engraved portraits of Fenelon.
