Description

American steel magnate (1862-1939) whose Bethlehem Steel became the second largest steel maker in the United States, and one of the most important heavy manufacturers in the world. TLS signed “C. M. Schwab,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, May 12, 1930. Letter to Elmer Daily, in part: "I have your kindly letter with enclosed pass. If opportunity offers, it will be a real pleasure for me to witness some of your Middle Atlantic League games. Thank you, very much." In fine condition.

Believing that athletics made for happier, healthier workers, Schwab had established an internal baseball league among six of his east coast plants: Bethlehem, Lebanon, Steelton, Wilmington, Fore River, and Sparrows Point. The Middle Atlantic League was a lower-level minor league circuit in action from 1925 through 1951, with several teams in Schwab's native Pennsylvania.
