Doctor, military officer, and politician (1752-1825) who led his militia in the Battles of Lexington and Concord, served under George Washington in the New York and New Jersey campaign of 1776, and became the 11th governor of Massachusetts. Partly-printed DS, signed “J. Brooks,” one page, 15.75 x 9.75, July 23, 1821. As governor of Massachusetts, Brooks appoints Nathan Dwelly Jr. as "Ensign of a Rifle Company, annexed to the second Regiment in the first Brigade, and fifth Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth." Signed in the upper left by Governor Brooks, and countersigned at the conclusion by Secretary of the Commonwealth Alden Bradford. The white paper seal affixed to the upper left remains intact. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light foxing and staining.
