Description

Stagecoach operator and co-founder of the American Express Company (1801-1869); his Butterfield Overland Mail Company, which operated from 1858 to 1861, was the longest stagecoach line in the world. Partly-printed DS, signed “J. Butterfield,” one page, 4.25 x 8.75, March 5, 1860. American Express Company stock transfer receipt for four shares to himself, signed at the bottom in ink by Butterfield. Handsomely mounted, matted, and framed with a portrait (bearing a facsimile signature) to an overall size of 18.25 x 17.25. In fine condition, with light wrinkling and toning.
