Eldest son of Robert E. Lee, who served as a Confederate general and aide-de-camp to Jefferson Davis (1832-1913). Partly-printed DS, signed “G. W. C. Lee,” one page, 18 x 16.25, June 27, 1877. Desirable bachelor's degree diploma from Washington & Lee University issued to Howard W. Barclay for having "successfully completed the required course of study in the Schools of Law and Equity." Signed in ink by George Washington Custis Lee as the university's president, and also signed by faculty members and trustees, including former Confederate General John Echols. The original red seal and ribbon affixed at the bottom remain intact. In fine condition. Accompanied by a 17.5 x 14.75 certificate awarded to Barclay for completing the "Junior German Class in the School of Modern Languages," signed in ink by three university officials.
