Description

American statesman (1871-1955) who served as secretary of state under Franklin Roosevelt for 11 years and who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945 for his role in establishing the United Nations. Vintage sepia matte-finish 7.5 x 11 Harris & Ewing portrait of Hull in a half-length pose, signed and inscribed in the lower border in fountain pen, "To Hon. Laurence A. Steinhardt—with high esteem—Cordell Hull, Oct. 1938.” In very fine condition, with a small crease to the lower left corner tip.

Laurence Adolph Steinhardt was an American economist, lawyer, and senior United States Department of State diplomat (born 1892) who served as a U.S. Ambassador to six countries—Sweden, Peru, the Soviet Union, Turkey, Czechoslovakia, and Canada. He was killed in a U.S. embassy plane crash on March 28, 1950, making him the first United States Ambassador to be killed in the line of duty.
