State legislator (1801-1890) who served as Georgia's Secretary of State for more than thirty years; he is remembered for twice saving the Great Seal of the State of Georgia: first burying it in his yard during Sherman's capture of the Capitol, and later secreting it away from Thomas H. Ruger, military governor of the state. Partly-printed DS, signed “N. C. Barnett,” one page, 8 x 12.5, January 3, 1848. Official Georgia land survey conducted "for James L. Graham who resides in this State, a Tract of Land containing 610 Acres." The detailed survey map is hand-drawn above. Signed at the conclusion by Surveyor General P. M. Compton, and signed on the reverse by Secretary of State Nathan Crawford Barnett. The original ribbon-suspended seal is worn but intact. In good to very good condition, with old repairs to separated folds, overall soiling, and a rusty circular paperclip impression to one edge. An uncommon and interesting antebellum document, as many of Georgia's records were burned or lost during the Civil War.
