Description

Virginian lawyer, judge, and politician (1790-1844) who served as Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of State in President Tyler's administration. Upshur was instrumental in negotiating the secret treaty that led to the 1845 annexation of Texas and played a key role in ensuring that it was admitted to the US as a slave state. He was among six killed in an accidental explosion at an official function on the USS Princeton. LS signed "A. P. Upshur," one page, 8 x 10, no date. Navy Department letter to the Hon. Truman Smith, in part: "I have received your letter…in behalf of Mr. Eld, an applicant for an appointment as Midshipman in the Navy. The rule of the Department prohibits the appointment of any one to that situation who is known to be over eighteen years of age; and the best interests of the service require that this rule be rigidly adhered to." In fine condition.
