Description

Hitchcock sketches his profile on the back of a photo taken by Andy Warhol

Two items related to Alfred Hitchcock's special Gala Tribute at New York's Lincoln Center on April 29, 1974.

The first is a color glossy 3.5 x 4.25 candid Polaroid photo of Hitchcock, who has signed the reverse in black ink and added a self-portrait sketch of his immediately recognizable profile; the front of the photo is marked in black felt tip, "A.H.," which, according to the son of the recipient, was written by famed pop artist Andy Warhol, who also took the offered photograph: 'The Polaroid was taken by Andy Warhol who wrote the A. H. I have no written proof of this, but I was there, and if you do some research, you'll see that Andy often used to write using a black marker on his pics.'

The second item is a TLS signed "Alfred J. Hitchcock," one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, May 6, 1974, addressed to noted Hollywood publicist John Springer, in full: "Just a note to thank you for all you did to help make the Lincoln Center Gala the great success that it turned out to be." In very good to fine condition, with light corner creasing to the letter, surface impressions to the photo from the sketch on the back, and a smudge and very poor ink adhesion to the sketch itself. Director Alfred Hitchcock was the recipient of the Gala Tribute, an award presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center based in New York City.
