Description

British engineer (1803-1859) who assisted his father, the engineer George Stephenson, with a number of railway-related enterprises. He later served as Chief Engineer of London's first railway, in that capacity constructing a number of bridges and tunnels, and served in Parliament. ALS signed “Rob. Stephenson,” one page both sides, 8 x 10, June 9, 1841. Handwritten letter to engineer F. M. Young, in part: "I am really overwhelmed with applications upon all my old assistants and pupils and should derive sincere pleasure if I were in a position to respond to them. The prospects in Engineering are very dull indeed and I do not see the way to much amendment. I have little or nothing in hand and only 2 or 3 small branch lines…Had I a situation to offer, you of course would stand near the top of my list." In very good to fine condition, with a few small edge tears, light creases, and a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top.
