Irish explorer (1819-1907) in the British Royal Navy, known for his discoveries in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. He confirmed explorer John Rae's controversial report gathered from Inuit sources on the fate of Franklin's lost expedition. ALS signed “F. L. McClintock,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, March 11, 1860. Handwritten letter to a colonel, making reference to several fellow explorers. In part: "I greatly regret that I cannot join your party on Thursday, as I am obliged to leave London this evening for Ireland. It would have given me sincere pleasure to have met my friend Rae, & his wife. I sent you the Magnetic Observations of Dr. Kane. You will see some account of our notes on the aurora in the appendix to the new edition of my narrative, which came out about 3 weeks ago. The Rev'd Mr. Fisher, Chaplain at Greenwich Hospital, & once a companion of Parry's in an Arctic Expedition, is much interested upon this subject, & has published his own observations & theories. You might obtain such valuable information from him." In fine condition, with a thin strip of toned adhesive to the edge of the last page, rusty circular paperclip impression to the top, and a bit of loss to one corner.
