Handwritten letter by the great geologist, in full: "Sir Charles Lyell presents his compliments to Dr. Masters & begs to thank him for the copy which he has sent of the translation of Goethe's Essay on the Metamorphosis of Plants." In fine condition. The Metamorphosis of Plants, published in 1790, was Goethe's first major attempt to describe what he called in a letter to a friend 'the truth about the how of the organism.'
