Description

On Frederick Cook's arctic adventures: "That he has proof for all he claims I have not the least doubt and my confidence is unshaken!"

Naval officer (1839-1911) who commanded the destruction of the Spanish fleet at Santiago de Cuba and who led the expedition to rescue Adolphus Greeley in the arctic. ALS signed “W. S. Schley,” one page, 5.75 x 9, Pocono Manor letterhead, September 14, 1909. Handwritten letter to Captain Bradley S. Osborn, secretary of the Arctic Club of America. In part: "I don't know that I can help you in naming anyone to be invited to the dinner to Cook as I don't know who is in the city and without a city directory I should not know any addresses! I think as an organization the club ought to be as conservative and dignified as Dr. Cook has been in this whirlwind of doubt, denunciation and in some instances abuse! That he has proof for all he claims I have not the least doubt and my confidence is unshaken!" In fine condition. Cook claimed to have reached the North Pole on April 21, 1908, nearly a year before Robert Peary; both men's accounts have been disputed ever since.
