Description

Affirmed ousts Alydar for the Triple Crown at Belmont—scarce 1978 race program signed by the two rival jockeys

Official program for the 110th running of the Belmont Stakes, held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, on June 10, 1978, which featured the all-time classic rivalry race between Alydar and Affirmed, the latter winning by a head and completing the 11th Triple Crown. The program, 28 pages, 4 x 9, is signed inside on the ‘eighth race’ page in ballpoint by famed jockeys Steve Cauthen and Jorge Velasquez. Includes two photos of the horses coming down the home stretch and at the finish line. In fine condition. The rivalry of Affirmed and Alydar is among the greatest in racing lore; although it was affirmed who won all of three of their Triple Crown legs, Alydar proved a most valiant competitor: with each successive race, Alydar narrowed Affirmed's margin of victory; Affirmed won by 1.5 lengths in the Kentucky Derby, by a neck in the Preakness, and by a head in the Belmont Stakes. Alydar has been described as the best horse in the history of Thoroughbred racing never to have won a championship.
