Description

The noted French executioner

French executioner (1767–1840) who assisted his father in a large number of executions during the French Revolution, and succeeded him as Royal Executioner. He was himself the executor of Fouquier-Tinville, and, in 1820, of Louis Pierre Louvel, assassin of the Duc de Berry. Rare LS in French, signed “Sanson,” one page, 8 x 12.5, May 27, 1818. An untranslated letter to the prefect of the French department of Seine-et-Oise in Versailles. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light foxing and staining.
