Description

"We are now at the very crisis of the affair"

Rare ALS signed “R. F. Burton,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 5, November 2, 1876. Letter to Edward Augustus Freeman, penned in his difficult-to-read hand, in part: "Thanks for yours of Oct. 25. I delayed answering in the hope of having some more information for you concerning the unfortunates of Kuni. My authority M. Lombardich, who is the active member of the Slav Society here, has written for details touching the refugees and has not yet had time to receive an answer. Meanwhile, you may assume the number at over 10,000 and you will find my information to have been generally correct. Send your medical to me and I will do everything for him…I am very glad that you have been able to use my notes…Could you return me Mss, 2 long letters and short letter? I am sorry to trouble you in the midst of what must be almost overpowering work, but they are wanted for another paper. We are now at the very crisis of the affair—armistice or war will probably have been decided upon before you receive these lines. Of course you note the Turkish ‘dodge’ of pushing on 70,000 men…I am told that Countess Jankovich…is the only Sister of Charity among the Kuni people and that she wants aid. Perhaps this had better be left to the doctor who has not yet written." In fine condition, with scattered light foxing, and a rusty paperclip impression to the top edge of the first page.
