Description

Extremely rare and early poster for a Liberation News Service Benefit concert headlined by MC5, 10 x 14, held at the Hotel Diplomat in New York on May 13, 1969, which lists supporting acts Children of God, Pageant Players, Newsreel, and the Pablo Light Show, with the left side prominently featuring a politically raised fist. In fine condition.

MC5 played this benefit show a month after the release of their landmark studio debut, Kick Out the Jams, which has since been deemed an important forerunner to punk rock music. As the band’s popularity surged—lead singer Rob Tyner appeared on the January 1969 front cover of Rolling Stone—MC5 began to enmesh themselves in the anti-war and anti-establishment movements of the period. Under the guidance of White Panther founder John Sinclair, the band became involved in left-wing politics and soon integrated their viewpoints into provocative stage shows. Most notably, MC5 performed as part of the protests against the Vietnam War at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago that were broken up by a police riot.

From the Ramones and Punk Collection of Daniel Rey, and accompanied by a letter of provenance.
