Signer of the Declaration of Independence from South Carolina (1746-1809) who was taken prisoner by the British during the siege of Charleston and held for about a year. Manuscript DS, signed “Heyward,” one page both sides, 8 x 5, March 19, 1772. Promissory note issued by John Ward, who affirms: "Two months after Date I promise to pay to Mr. Edward Simonon or Order Eight hundred & seventy one pounds 13/2 amount Money of South Carolina." Signed on the reverse by Thomas Heyward, Jr. In very good condition, with complete overall silking giving the text a slightly fuzzy appearance. A particularly early document signed by the 25-year-old future signer.
