Typed manuscript fragment, signed "John Dos Passos, Westmoreland, Va., Feb. 1950," one page, 8.5 x 5, featuring twelve typed lines with several corrections done in Dos Passos's hand. Captioned "The People on the Hill," the piece reads, in part: "We stood round the cab shuffling our feet in the deep puttycolored dust. Behind us we see a steep dusty hill marked with a scramble of little flatroofed shanties standing out light against the purplish rock of the mountain and in front of us we look down at Lima all pale white and dustcolor like a Moorish city with flat roofs and flimsy domes stretching far into the seaside blur on its arid bench over the Pacific."
