Description

Partly-printed document with handwritten statement by Cleveland, signed “Sworn to before me, Sept. 9, 1862, Grover Cleveland, Court of Deeds for Buffalo,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 12.75, September 9, 1862. Chattel mortgage statement from Joseph Benjamin to Edward P. Beals, for a "five sided Lake Canal Boat called the 'Julia Benjamin,'" recording a series of promissory notes to be repaid. At the conclusion, Grover Cleveland pens a lengthy statement, in small part: "I Edward P. Beals the mortgagee named in the foregoing chattel mortgage hereby state that the nature of the claim enacted by virtue of said chattel mortgage is as security for the payment of money to become due upon the promissory notes in said mortgage described." Signed at the conclusion by Cleveland and signed twice by Beals. In fine condition, with some light toning, and tape reinforcement along the hinge.
