Richard Varick Autograph Document Signed

Description

American soldier and statesman (1753-1831) who was aide-de-camp to Benedict Arnold prior to the latter's defection to the British. Varick later served as Washington's private secretary, mayor of New York, and a New York state legislator. Boldly penned ADS signed “Rich’d Varick,” one page, 8.25 x 13.25, October 21, 1792. A legal document penned in the third person by Varick as the mayor of New York, who also incorporates his autograph within the text, in part: “Before me Richard Varick Mayor of the City of New York personally came Edward Ewen of the same city Cooper and acknowledged himself to be indebted to the people of the State of New York in the sum of Twenty pounds lawful money of the same State, to be made & levied of his Goods & Chattels Lands & Tenements to the use of the people of the State of New York.” Signed at the conclusion by Varick. In very good to fine condition, with paper loss to the edges, and archival tape reinforcements to the back of the horizontal folds.
