Description

ALS as president, one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, September 17, 1856. Handwritten letter from Washington, ostensibly to his private White House secretary Sidney Webster, in full: "I received your telegraphic dispatch at 5 o'clock this evening. A letter from me and two letters in an envelope directed by Mr. Snow were already on their way to Newport, agreeably to the request of your letter received by Mr. S. this morning. I infer from your telegraph that Saratoga has become suddenly, particularly agreeable. I hope you may find there both health and enjoyment. The weather is unusually pleasant here just now and in our entire family there is no case of ague. Howe has suggested to me that, if I go north it would be agreeable to him to be of the party. Judge Anderson will also probably make the trip with us. Perhaps you may find it more consistent with your other arrangements to go to N.H. without returning to this city. If so you can do so and meet me at the Groton Junction or at Nashua. I now think I shall leave here Tuesday Sept. 30 and reach Concord Thursday Oct. 2nd. I drove out to Mr. George Riggs on Monday. They are very well—Give my kind regards to Mr. and Mrs. Riggs." In fine condition.
