Description

Manuscript DS as president, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page both sides, 10.25 x 15.25, November 27, 1880. Pardon issued by President Hayes, in part: "Whereas, William Tippett, on conviction of assault, was sentenced by the Police Court of the District of Columbia on the 29th day of October, 1880, to imprisonment for 60 days in the District Jail, in default of payment of a fine of $50;; And whereas, circumstances are made to appear evincing that he was at the time hardly responsible for his conduct, wheretofore his pardon is earnestly recommended by Hon: Thomas P. Morgan, of the District Commissioners, as well on accounyt of the prisoner as of his destitute wife and children…I, Rutherford B. Hayes, President of the United States of America…do hereby grant to the said William Tippett, a full and unconditional pardon." Signed at the conclusion by President Hayes and countersigned by Secretary of State William Evarts. The white paper seal affixed beside the president's signature is fully intact. In very good to fine condition, with heavy intersecting folds, and the signature a couple of shades light.
