Letter to friend and fellow actor Basil Rathbone, in full: "I am so very thrilled and touched to receive such a lovely letter from you. I am slightly alarmed by one phrase in your letter, which seems to infer that you had written a previous letter, but I think it is all part of a sweet joke. In any case, I never received it. I am so very happy for you that you are back in the theatre. It must be a great joy. I remember the indescribable feeling of really working again when I came back towards the end of the war, not having played in London for six years. I think the reason for 'To be or not to be…' being for the most part spoken, was that that seemed to me to be more spoken thought that the other. Vivien and I open tonight in 'Antigone'; the Anouilh version. This, I think, is a pretty good piece; I wonder if perhaps you saw it in New York. This completes our three plays; 'The School for Scandal' which we simply adore; 'Richard III'; and we have a little curtain raiser, Chekov's 'The Proposal,' before 'Antigone.' This goes on till June, when we really have a very long rest, which we haven't had for eleven years. All our love to you, dear chap, and how very, very sweet of you to write so generously. I hope you will forgive this being in type." In fine condition. A delightful letter between two of Britain's foremost actors of stage and screen.
