Description

ALS signed “W. T. Sherman, General,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Headquarters Army of the United States letterhead, January 31, 1871. Letter to Colonel Lewis Mulford Dayton, in part: "I received your letter of the 28 yesterday and it so happened that Genl Gresham came in a few minutes thereafter and I begged him to reconsider his division. He said he would give me a positive answer. Yesterday he sent me word that he really could not undertake to do the thing. The time is now short, and I am certain no one will consent, for it has been put off too long, I am sorry for it, for I should hate to have this neglect attributed to me." In fine condition.

Dayton (1835-1891) received an officer's commission on March 11, 1863 as captain and served as Sherman's Aide-de-camp in the Union Volunteer Army. He remained on Sherman's staff and was promoted to Major and Asst. Adjutant General on January 12, 1865. Two months later, he was promoted again to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel and remained in that capacity through the end of the war.
