Description

ALS signed “W. T. Sherman,” one page on two adjoining sheets, 5.5 x 9.25, September 6, 1887. Letter to General Manning Ferguson Force, in part: "Things at District became a little mixed, because both Dayton & Hickenlooper were in Europe at the time for making the arrangements. All is working well and I believe we shall have a fine meeting. It is understood that Jacobsen will be the orator, and I think he has notified the local committee that he is 'all ready.' Of all your friends no one felt more deeply than I that your health had compelled you to knock off work. I hope rest will bring back health, & renewed usefulness." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original War Department mailing envelope.

Manning Ferguson Force was a lawyer, judge, and soldier from Ohio (1824-1899) who became known as the commander of the 20th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was promoted to major general of volunteers in March 1865 and, following the Battle of Atlanta, he participated in Sherman's March to the Sea. Force was a recipient of the Army Medal of Honor for gallantry in action.
