Description

Incredible flown American flag, 5.75 x 4, carried to the moon aboard the Lunar Module Challenger during the historic Apollo 17 mission. The flag is accompanied by a TLS from Commander Gene Cernan, one page, 5.25 x 7.5, NASA letterhead, December 7, 1975, which reads: “This flag of our nation flew to the moon aboard the spaceships ‘America’ and ‘Challenger,’ Apollo XVII, December 6-19, 1972. Let it be to you as it is to me, a symbol of the ambition, effort, and self-sacrifice of a people dedicated to the greatest nation in the history of the world. Please accept this flag with the pride the heritage of our country so righteously deserves.” Both are mounted and framed to an overall size of 12.75 x 15.75. In fine condition.

Originates from the personal collection of longtime NASA employee Robert B. 'Stretch' Flanagan, a Senior Security Specialist who accompanied the Apollo astronauts on their post-flight goodwill world tours. He was nicknamed ‘Stretch’ on account of his 6´6″ height.
