Description

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Pennsylvania (1742-1798), and one of only six men who signed both the Declaration and the US Constitution. Manuscript DS, one page, 8 x 6, June 5, 1795. Bill of exchange issued to James Wilson, in part: “At Sixty days sight of this my only Bill of Exchange, please to pay Messrs Hicks & Campbell or order Two Thousand Dollars for Value received, and charge the same to acct as advised.” Accepted and signed at the conclusion by Wilson. Promissory notes and bills of exchange often passed as a form of currency in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with this bill of exchange likely part of a land speculation in which Wilson was involved. In very good to fine condition, with overall professional silking, and inexplicable trimming.
