Description

Physician and signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Hampshire (1729-1795) who served as that state's governor from 1790 to 1794. Partly-printed DS, signed “Josiah Bartlett Just. Peace,” one page, 6.25 x 7.5, April 9, 1773. Document filled out and signed within the text by Bartlett, and signed again at the conclusion. In part: "To the Sheriff of the county of Rockingham…In His Majesty's Name you are required to attach the goods or estate of Samuel March…to the value of sixty shillings lawful money, and for want thereof to take the body of the said Samuel March (if he may be found in your precinct) and him safely keep, so that he may be had before me Josiah Bartlett Esq; one of his Majesty's Justices of the peace…and thereto answer to David Tuxbury of Salisbury…in a plea." Inlaid into a slightly larger sheet and in fine condition, with old tape on the back of one fold split.
