Description

TLS as president, one page, 5 x 8, black-bordered White House letterhead, August 4, 1923. Letter to Charles A. Rawson of Iowa, two days after ascending to the presidency. In full: "Thank you for your message of the third. Although time does not permit more than a word of thanks, I am none the less grateful." In fine condition, with minor surface loss in the borders. Accompanied by the original black-bordered White House mailing envelope, known as a mourning cover. President Warren G. Harding had died suddenly on the night of August 2nd, thrusting Vice President Calvin Coolidge into the nation's highest office.
