Description

Ty Cobb on the preservation of signed baseballs: "Shellac each name which will preserve it"

ALS, one page, 7 x 10.5, personal letterhead, December 18, 1936. Interesting letter about the preservation of autographed baseballs by the well-meaning Hall of Famer, in part: "The baseballs and candy arrived O.K. and the balls have been autographed and am returning to you properly signed as you requested. I note some of names are fading and wish to suggest you cut out of piece of paper the size of each autograph and use as a sort of stencil and shellac each name which will preserve it and in this way you can fill in with other names on unused portions of ball." In fine condition, with a crease to the upper left corner. A great letter from the legendary ballplayer, promoting the use of a now-outdated conservation practice for signed baseball memorabilia.
