Description

ALS signed “TNW,” four pages, 6 x 7, Edgartown, Massachusetts letterhead, July 25, 1969. A long letter to author James Herlihy, which is full of biographical information, gossip, and judicious advice. It starts with Wilder detailing his 20-month stay in the border town of Douglas, Arizona: "I decided to go to the desert and be a hermit…My car began to struggle and poop out as I came to a hill and a sign saying Welcome to Arizona." He then goes on to describe the sociology of Martha's Vineyard and in this connection gives forth "Wilder's Law—a man between 18 and 25 who for several years has done nothing becomes a misery to himself and a bore to others. It is written into the human condition that maleness means work = homo labor." The next topic is actress Mia Farrow's career perils: "Her directors don't seem to distinguish between girls conditioned to neurosis and mentally arrested. She's strong, healthy and intelligent and she's being forced into an 'image.'" In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
