Description

The founder of Al-Anon writes to AA's first archivist

Co-founder of Al-Anon (1891-1988) who was the wife of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) co-founder Bill W. Scarce ALS signed “Lois,” penned on the reverse of a color 5.5 x 3.5 postcard of South Shore Beach in Bermuda, postmarked February 1, 1964. Written while vacationing in Bermuda, a letter to her secretary Nell Wing, in full: "Thanks for all you did to get us off. We are having a swell, relaxing time altho it has been a bit chilly. I do hope you are feeling better & that your examination found nothing serious. We took a trip to St. Georges yesterday & the day was simply glorious, warm & sunny. Bill joins me in lots of love dear & thanks for all you are always doing for us." In fine condition, with a stain on the image side. Wing was an instrumental force in the lives of Bill and Lois Wilson and to the success of Alcoholics Anonymous, where she served as the organization's first archivist. After Bill died in 1971 and Lois in 1988 the royalties of the Big Book passed to Wing, which provided her with about $1 million a year for the remainder of her life.
