Description

Hugely desirable AQS on an off-white 6.75 x 4 sheet, signed "Henry W. Longfellow," who writes the first stanza to his 1841 short poem Excelsior, in full: "The shades of night were falling fast / As through an Alpine village passed / A youth, who bore, 'mid snow and ice, / A banner with the strange device, / Excelsior!" Longfellow adds the date to the lower left, "January 30, 1855." Matted and framed with a cabinet portrait to an overall size of 17.5 x 11.75. In very good to fine condition, with semicircular stains to the perimeter.
