Description

One week after becoming chief justice: "The task which I face is one of incessant labor and great responsibility"

TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 7 x 9.25, personal letterhead, July 19, 1921. Letter to the Hon. Myron T. Herrick, American ambassador to France. In part: "I am ashamed of not having been able to acknowledge your kind telegram of congratulation before this, but the truth is that I was so occupied in Montreal, in listening to the closing argument of a long arbitration, and so much pressed in Washington during the week of my being sworn in, that I haven't had any opportunity to tackle my correspondence until now…This makes it necessary that I should send this letter to you at Paris, where I am delighted to see you have had, what you deserved, a most cordial welcome on your return. The task which I face is one of incessant labor and great responsibility, and I am concerned lest I might not be able to meet the exigency; but if earnest effort and considerable experience will enable me to discharge the duties satisfactorily, I hope to be of use. I prophesy for you great success in your mission which is so well known to you already, and which in the important world negotiations that must now be carried on is of a critical character." In fine condition, with an erased notation to the top of the first page.
