Description

King of the Netherlands, Grand Duke of Luxembourg, and Duke of Limburg (1792-1849); during his reign, the Netherlands became a parliamentary democracy with the new constitution of 1848. Scarce ALS in French, signed “Guillaume Pr d'Orange,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, September 9, 1839. Letter to the Marquess de Trazegnies, wife of the Marquis de Trazegnies, head of the Orangist party, lamenting their families separation because of past events over the last decade. In part (translated): "I cannot resist the pleasure of writing a few words to you, especially since they will reach you without having aroused the curiosity of the post and without being able to compromise you, two reasons which, up until the present time, have been the reason for not having written to you since the events of 1830, but I have always welcomed your letters with recognition and joy and I have often impressed upon those who have made the trip to see you the duty of conveying to you my sincere gratitude. You will easily understand that I regret the past, and that everything that reminds me of it reawakens me, for the moment, as from a beautiful dream. You will therefore sense the infinite pleasure which M. de Trazegnies's visit gave me, but, as nothing is ever perfect in this world, we missed Clementine, I love to hope, just the same, that in another epoch you will try to come here, where you can be sure that you will be received by us with open arms. What long time it has been since we have seen each other! And these ten years have put an end to so many agreeable things, the existence of which has spoiled us for life, and which for which one does not know where to go anymore...time and absence will never erase the sympathetic feelings which I have vowed to this Belgium, formerly so good, now misled, but, however not so much that I do not dare to nourish the hope of seeing her, one day, return to the right road." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope and by a full English translation.
