Description

ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, Spade House, Sandgate letterhead, March 17, 1902. Letter to Miss Mary Rawlings.Toning, in part: "I am very sorry that I am unable to present my book to the South Place library. The number of applications of this kind is very considerable…To write a book of this sort in the place of ‘popular’ fiction means a direct loss to me of several hundred pounds & a grave invasion of the prospects of those who are dependent upon me. I think it is for some one else to buy & distribute the book. I must also point out that any copy purchased through a bookseller stimulates the publication & sale of other books of the same class, as against fiction." In very good condition, with an old tape stain to the first page, and somewhat irregular toning throughout.
