Veteran of the Seminole and Mexican-American Wars (1818-1861) who was the first Union general to be killed in the American Civil War and is noted for his actions in the state of Missouri at the beginning of the conflict. ALS signed “N. Lyon, Capt. 2'd Inf'y, R.A.Q.M.,” one page, 8 x 10, September 30, 1851. Letter to Major General Thomas S. Jesup, in full: "In compliance with Instructions from your Office of July 24th 1851, I herewith respectfully transmit a List of persons to whim certified accounts have been given and the amounts therein on account of the Quartermaster's Dept. up to present date. Should other certified accounts be given they will be reported. Major Allen has advised me of the arrival of Funds for the payment of debt incurred at this place, but are not yet received." In fine condition, with light toning, and a short split, along the top fold.
