Description

"As President Reagan said yesterday, the strength of the American system is best demonstrated by an orderly transfer of power from one administration to the next"

Original manuscript page of Vice President Bush's address to the Senate on the day after his inauguration, January 21, 1981, accomplished in Pitman shorthand by William Mohr as official reporter of debates of the U.S. Senate, one page, 8.25 x 12.25, signed at the conclusion in ink, "George Bush." The piece reads, in part (transcribed): "Mr. Majority Leader and Mr. Minority Leader, Senators, at the outset of these brief remarks, let me express my deep appreciation to the man who, over the past four years, has brought great distinction both to the Presidency of the Senate and the Vice Presidency of the United States, Fritz Mondale.

You will note that I first mentioned the Senate Presidency, then the Vice Presidency, having been duly advised, if not lectured, by the majority leader and the minority leader regarding the importance of the two offices that I hod. I also note with great sincerity the advice publicly given here by the minority leader, and the eloquent appeal to fair play and appeal for cooperation, and the advice that he has given to me privately. The majority leader and I have talked about it a great deal.

The cooperation and many courtesies shown me and members of my staff by Vice President Mondale and his staff, I should tell you, as they relate to the Presidency of the Senate and the Vice Presidency, have made for a very smooth transition in what would have been an awkward and difficult time. As President Reagan said yesterday, the strength of the American system is best demonstrated by an orderly transfer of power from one administration to the next; and, by their words and deeds in recent weeks, both President Carter and Vice President Mondale reflected that strength. For this we all, regardless of party affiliation, owe them a debt of thanks." In fine condition, with some light creasing, and two file holes, and a paperclip impression, to the top edge.

Accompanied by a notarized letter of provenance signed by William Mohr, in part: "President Reagan and Vice President Bush were inaugurated on January 20, 1981. The next day, Vice President Bush presided over the U.S. Senate, in his capacity as President of the Senate, and addressed the senators. It was my function, as an Official Reporter of Debates, to take down his speech in shorthand (Pitman) and then transcribe it for the Congressional Record. After Vice President Bush completed his speech, I asked him to autograph the first page of my shorthand notes and handed him my fountain pen to do so."
