American author (1896-1972) remembered for her classic 1943 novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. AQS on an off-white 5 x 5.5 album page, signed below in blue ballpoint, "Betty Smith, October 12, 1948." Smith quotes from her famous work, in full: "Hope ever urges on and tells us tomorrow will be better. There's a tree that grows in Brooklyn." Signed below by Quaker writer D. Elton Trueblood. In fine condition.
