Description

Disney's fondly remembers his youth in Kansas City

TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, August 20, 1937. Letter to Mrs. George H. English at the Hay-Adams House in Washington, DC. Disney remembers his childhood in Kansas City, Missouri, in part: "I was happy to have your note which recalled to my mind many pleasant memories of my youthful days around 31st Street and Bellfontaine. I remember Jack and Edward very well and all of the fun we had together as kids in Grandma English's yard. I have often wondered about them, so your brief mention of them is very much appreciated. Please give them my kindest remembrances and best wishes." In very good condition, with overall creasing, short splits along the intersecting folds, and a vintage Snow White clipping affixed to the lower right corner. Accompanied by an image of 'Grandma English,' the mother of George H. English, Jr.; George H. English, Sr. owned the property where Walt Disney lived.

When Walt was nine years old, his family moved from Chicago to 3028 Bellefontaine Avenue in Kansas City's east side, where they lived until he was sixteen. In this letter, Disney fondly recalls his formative years playing in the city's streets. From 1915 to 1917, Disney took Saturday drawing classes at the Kansas City Art Institute, building the foundation for his future artistic endeavors. It was also the site of his first animation studio: at the age of twenty in 1921, he founded Laugh-O-Gram on East 31st Street, remaining in business for just two years. A desirable letter from the legendary pioneer of animation.
